Congratulations to all the high school sailors who qualified for the 2008 ISSA Team Racing National Championship. We raced 90 races in two days and a re-sail. The Race Committee was right on the mark starting earlier today - the winds have died entirely, even though the sun has finally come out. Today's racing was extremely competitive and tight. The overall winner sailed a terrific championship round, thoroughly dominating racing today with a perfect 6-0 Championship Round.

The results by Division are as follows:

The Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association, "MISSA", was proud to host this year's team racing Championship. Lake Minnetonka is one of the best sailing venues in the Midwest and the sailors who came to the event got to experience perfect MISSA racing weather. This event could not have happened without the many volunteers and the Lake Minnetonka Sailing School/Minnetonka Yacht Club. Thank you to all the volunteers and regatta staff who contributed.

Baker Finals

CDM seniors Andrew Mason, Max Rollins, Michael Rolfes and Victoria Plate sailed the final race of their HS sailing finishing 9th and winning bronze division.

66 races were completed Saturday in 12-22k winds. PRO Blake Middleton and regatta chair Don Shea managed all the round robin races in 7 hours, seeding teams into Sunday's finals. The top four sailed a double round-robin, and the middle and lower brackets sailed a single round robin under threat of thunderstorms.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to the volunteers who pulled off a terrific team race championship.

The racing is winding down. The wind has begun to subside and is now out of the south and between 5 and 7 mph. The wave action is nominal and the racing has become much more tactical.

Sunday arrived a little faster for the kids than they would have liked. After a long day of racing, the sailors were ready for a break.

Today the winds are lighter 7-12mph, the skies are overcast and rain appears to be going North, away from us. Blake Middleton began the Competitors Meeting promptly at 0830 hrs and launched immediately afterwards. First gun was at 0930 hrs so we are underway for the second day.

As the day winds down, the wind continues out of the East - it's moved slightly South to SSE and wind speeds are between 16 and 27 mph.

The kids continue to sail hard, battling the winds and their competition. The top teams are

Tabor Academy - 7-1
Point Loma - 7-2
St Georges - 6-3
Newport Harbor - 6-3
Severn - 6-2

We will finish the complete rotation, earlier than previously thought - the Race Committee, Umpires, Dock Boss and Mark Boats are keeping the races moving along at a fast pace.

The end of day will be very busy with 5 teams in contention for the championship flight, and three others within striking distance.

High School Sailing Championships in Minnesota

The weather is ideal for racing, steady breeze at about 15 with a few gusts and a few lulls. We are enjoying the level of competition. We have already completed 47 races and the competitors are doing a great job of quickly switching boats.

Currently leading the competition is Tabor leading with 7-1 and Point Loma is in 2nd with 6-2 and a 4 way tie for 3rd with St. Georges, Lake Forest Forest, Newport Harbor and Severn.

After 30 Races, completing the preliminary seeded brackets, there has been some exciting sailing. Defending champions Tabor Academy are currently undefeated with Lake Forest (near Chicago) close behind with only one loss. Then there is a large group (five teams) with two losses. The blustery conditions with winds varying from 5 to 20 knots and fairly shifty have resulted in lots of race lead changes and several capsizes have occurred.

The rotation is moving forward nicely with a goal for completing the 66 Race Round robin today.

The winds have moderated since reaching 23 mph earleir this morning. The winds are now out of the East at 10 mph.

As of Race 24 we have one team, Tabor Academy that is 4-0. There are 4 teams, St Georges, Lake Forest, Point Loma and Antilles, that are tied at 3-1.

Day One is Underway!

Good morning everyone. The 2008 Baker Team Racing National Championship is underway. The sailors arrived on Light House Island as early as 0745 hrs and were greeted with a light breeze out of the East and chilly 50 degree temps(quite balmy weather actually for MN.)

Currently the wind is 16 mph, gusting to 23, out of the ESE. The forecast is for steady breezes all day and great racing.

At 0900 hrs Jeff Solum (Regatta Chair) greeted the sailors at the Competitors Meeting and briefed them on the day ahead. He introduced Tim Hogan, President of ISSA, and other regatta officials. Blake Middleton (PRO) followed Jeff with a discussion of expectations from the Race Committee and his plan for the day (we will race late today). Don Becker then discussed how Limited on Water Umpiring works and what the sailors needed to remember for protests and rules infractions.

The Sailors launched at 0940 and the first race, between St Georges and Norfolk Collegiate began shortly after the course was set.

Three Days Until Baker 2008

The Baker Team Racing National Championship is almost here and we’re looking forward to welcoming you to the Lake Minnetonka Sailing School and Lake Minnetonka. As you make the final preparations for your trip, there are a few things to remember:

1. We are racing off an island so you need to think about how much time you need to get to the island. The ferry station is going to be at Carson’s Bay, a 10 minute boat ride to Lighthouse Island. Make sure you budget enough time for us to ferry you to venue before check in and registration times. We will have a pontoon boat running a regular schedule for racers, coaches and team parents/leaders; but you need to leave ample time on Friday for registration and especially on the weekend to get to the island.

2. The regatta staff has arranged specific parking areas for the event. We have space set aside at Deephaven Elementary School, ¼ mile east of the yacht club, a short walk to the launch facility. We will have volunteers directing you to the appropriate lots; please cooperate with them. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON MINNETONKA BOULEVARD. The police will not hesitate to ticket you, even on a holiday weekend.

3. We are very conscious of the Island environment and want to do everything possible to minimize our impact on the lake. With almost 165 people on Lighthouse Island for the weekend, we will generate a lot of plastic garbage. We want to limit that as much as possible. To that end, we ask that you bring a re-usable water bottle. We will provide ample water supplies so you can refill as often as necessary. Please help us by bringing a re-usable bottle.
